Medical Cannabis

Medical Cannabis or Cannabidiol (CBD) oil can provide complementary therapy for a variety of pet conditions.

CBD is a non-intoxicating, non-psychoactive compound produced by the plant Cannabis sativa L.

CBD Information

Endocannabinoid System
(ECS)

ECS is an internal body system composed of neurotransmitters (CBD), receptors & enzymes. All complex animals have an ECS. Receptors are found in virtually all body tissues. Important receptors are in the nervous and immune systems but also in abdominal organs and the skin.

What conditions can be treated with CBD?

Chronic pain

Arthritis

Epilepsy

Anxiety

Appetite loss

Palliative care

How does CBD effect the body?

CBD can be used to effect:

  • mood & anxiety

  • cognition

  • reduce pain

  • reduce inflammation

  • appetite

  • nausea

  • immune function

What is in CBD?

The cannabis plant contains many compounds (over 700) including "phytocannabinoids". For our medical purposes we use 2 of these compounds - CBD & THC. CBD is divided further into either CBD isolates or CBD full spectrum compounds. As THC has psychoactive properties, it is strictly controlled. If used at all, it must be only in extremely small concentrations.

How does CBD work?

CBD works by interacting with CBD receptors in body tissues we want to target or treat. This activation has positive effects on the targeted tissue resulting in neuroprotection, reduced pain & reduced inflammation.

CBD vs THC vs Hemp

  • CBD has therapeutic benefits in the body by activating the ECS system. It can be used for many medical purposes. CBD does not contain THC.

  • THC can be used to treat severe pain. Can be combined with CBD in controlled concentrations.

  • Hemp has <0.3% THC and 0.08% CBD so has no medical therapeutic benefits. It does supply protein, fibre & essential fatty acids.

SAFE USE OF CBD OIL IN PETS

CBD is legally available by prescription through our clinic. Our CBD is tested & certified, and supplied by a trusted supplier, CBD Vets Australia.

Medical CBD, like any other medical product, is:

  • grown and processed under strict control

  • analyzed under laboratory conditions

  • all components are identified

  • all components are of known concentration

  • CBD +/- THC is dispensed under known concentrations with components suitable for particular animal conditions

  • different pet conditions require different CBD components dispensed at different concentrations

UNSAFE use of CBD and/or Hemp oil can occur when:

  • products are bought online or from "backyard" suppliers

  • growing & and packaging conditions are not controlled

  • products do not undergo laboratory analysis

  • even if the product does contain CBD, it may be of unidentified CBD components which are of unknown concentration

  • products are of unknown components

  • components can potentially be foreign, contaminated, or toxic, especially if THC is present
